All around me am fascinated by the scent of mango buds in the south wind. Kagil's succulent kuhutale Fagun's turbulent basanti wind is swaying. Green leaves have risen on the trees. Seeing the buds and flowers, it is understood that Fagun has said goodbye to winter. With the arrival of the season of spring, the nature of the abhaman village of Bengal has blossomed with eye-catching shimul flowers.
But in the evolution of time, the dazzling dark red colored Shimul tree in Naogaon, which was dazzled by fire, is now almost extinct. Even a decade ago, most of the houses in different villages of the district could be seen on the sidewalks and in the streets. Spring reminded me of the shimul flowers blooming in every tree.
Abu Taher Ali, an elderly man from Safapur village in Mahadevpur upazila, said there used to be a lot of Shimul trees in the village. Shimul tree is one of the main sources of natural cotton extraction. All parts of this plant have medicinal properties. Ayurvedic doctors still use different parts of this plant to treat various diseases. The scientific name of the shimul tree is "Bombbox Saiba Lin". It is a plant of the Bombacaciaceae family.
It is propagated by seeds and stems. Shimul flowers in 5-6 years after planting. It is 90 to 100 feet long. It is quite thick compared to that. Shimul tree survives for one and a half years by coping with various natural calamities. At the end of winter the leaves fall off. The tree blooms in early spring. And the fruit is from this flower. The fruits ripen towards the end of the month of Chaitra. In the month of Baishakh, when the fruits ripen and dry, the fruits burst automatically in the air and fly naturally with cotton, which is born from the seeds scattered far and wide.
Like other trees, this tree is not planted by anyone as a hobby. No care is taken. With carelessness and disrespect, the tree grows naturally. Almost all parts of this tree are useful. Its bark, leaves and flowers are very favorite food of cattle. There is no pair of cotton in making pillows, quilts and mattresses. But now people are cutting down this tree for no reason. In the past, large-scale construction work, making various types of packing boxes including toothpicks and using brick kilns as fuel have not been planted in comparison. As a result, this tree is on the verge of extinction today.
The deforestation has had a negative impact on the environment. As this tree is very high, different types of birds including crows, cuckoos, kites and bucks used to live in nests. As a result of deforestation, these birds have lost their habitat in the crisis of existence. Due to the lack of trees, these birds are gradually disappearing due to lack of habitat.
Minhazul Rahman, a resident of the district headquarters, said that this Shimul is also known as a medicinal plant. People in rural areas used the root of this tree to cure poisoning and constipation. It is possible to earn 10-15 thousand rupees by selling cotton from a big tree. The price of Shimul cotton has gone up a lot now. Even then this tree is constantly being destroyed.
